Exercise and healthy diet help to prevent heart disease. Our tetanus shot prevents this infection if we cut ourselves and are exposed to the tetanus bacteria. We have regular screening tests for early detection of problems that are far more easily treated before complications arise. 

What about your car? We know that regular oil changes and basic maintenance help to prevent future problems with the engine.

Medical care for our pets provides for rare emergency care, but more importantly, regular preventive care. Fifty years ago, "the dog" was part of the family, but veterinary care was almost non-existent. One waited until a disease may occur, then the dog would live or die, with minimal medical intervention. Compared to today, this care was quite primitive.

There are many examples of preventive medicine with pets.

• High quality, intelligent nutrition - excellent ingredients, carefully balanced, and planned for life stages.
• Selective vaccination to protect against common deadly bacterial and viral diseases.
• Leash walking, perhaps with halter collars, to help prevent road accidents.
• Blood and urine screening pets periodically to check for internal changes before the pet becomes sick - being able to step in and make simple changes early in the course of a disease. An example is heartworm disease. You can discover this disease on a yearly screening test of an apparently healthy dog, while the disease is treatable, or find out when the dog is dying of heart failure from a heart full of worms.
• Regular stool checks and year round deworm treatments for pets to prevent worm infestation, prevent contamination of your yard, and to prevent the passing of parasites to your family.
