When dealing with fleas, the most common external parasite, prevention is key for both the comfort and health of our pets and ourselves. Not only do fleas cause intense irritation and discomfort to your pet, they can also carry an internal parasite, Dipylidium caninum, one of the common tapeworms. Tapeworms can infect your pet and can cause disease in people.
Commonly, a severe skin reaction called Flea Allergy Dermatitis will affect dogs and cats. It only takes one single flea to cause extreme allergic inflammation, skin trauma, hair loss and infection in sensitive animals.
We are pleased to carry flea prevention products to protect your animals and your family from an infestation. Gone are the days when we relied on flea collars, baths, powder, pet and house sprays. These insecticides were unhealthy for your pets and for people. The focus has now shifted to treatments that are extremely safe, and unbelievably convenient to use.
It is ideal to protect your pet from infection when there is no longer frost outdoors – approximately from mid-May through to November. Options for prevention include an injection for cats that will protect for 6 months, oral tablets for dogs given monthly, or topical products which are applied to the skin once a month. Some products also protect against internal parasites, ticks and mites.
