Why are medical problems so complicated to diagnose?

Since pets cannot explain what they feel, you must interpret what they show you. Often this is accurate, but the signs that pets show can also be misinterpreted. If your pet has an internal condition that is not evident outwardly, then you will have absolutely no knowledge that something is brewing inside. Unfortunately, you cannot always rely on what you see or think.

Treating pets is much like treating babies. This is an art as well as science, as the veterinarian must have an intuitive understanding of animal behavior, interpreting the significance of any changes noted.

What do we mean by "Working together with you for the health of your pet"?

By working together with you - describing your observations and thoughts, we can ascertain a chronological history of significant changes noted by your family, leading to the current situation. The complete physical examination, as well as the consultation with you, provide us a full and detailed, initial medical assessment.

It is recommended that your pet have a full physical examination at the first sign of any change noted at home, as well as annual checkups (more often in seniors or patients with chronic medical conditions).

How do I know when something is wrong with my pet?

Changes of significance include, but are not limited to: recurrent vomiting, diarhea, lameness; loss of appetite; changes in drinking, urinating (more or less than usual); changes in breathing, attitude, energy, exercise tolerance, weight, hair coat; any significant changes in regular routine habits.

Through the examination, the doctor will gather information from physical parameters regarding your pet's current health status. These first stages in assessment will guide the veterinarian to make recommendations regarding the need for further evaluation of blood samples, blood pressure, EKG, laboratory testing of fecal samples, cytology, radiology, urinalysis, ultrasound or other diagnostic procedures. In fact, over 75% of a diagnosis is made with the help of accurate and reliable diagnostic procedures.

How can I try to stay ahead of my pet’s problems?

We recommend annual wellness screening. Wellness screening gives us an internal picture of your pet’s health by evaluating organ function, red and white blood cells, and basic urine parameters. This testing allows us to identify and treat problems at an early stage, instead of waiting for advanced problems to show externally.
