Homemade Anti-Skunk Shampoo

Has your pet been "skunked"? You may be surprised to learn that tomato juice is not very effective for removing skunk spray from dogs (or humans). Instead you can try:
One litre of 3% hyrogen peroxide (available at most pharmacies and grocery stores), one cup of baking soda, 1 teaspoon liquid laundry detergent

As with any bath, protecting your pet's eyes is very important. Soak your pet's fur with water and generously apply the solution. Let stand for 10 minutes. Rinse off the solution well with tap water. Repeat if odour remains.

We also offer professional grooming services and a special de-skunking solution available for purchase. Please ask us for more information.

Why does my pet still smell if he gets wet?

Sometimes a dog that has been sprayed and cleaned may still have a skunk odor. This is because some components in the sulphur compounds of skunk spray called thiols, don't have an odour until they are wet. Therefore, a dog that goes out in the rain may unfortunately smell again.
