What vaccinations do you provide to new puppies?

We provide puppies with distemper, adenovirus, parainfluenza, Bordetella, parvovirus, leptospirosis and rabies. It is mandatory in Ontario to vaccinate for rabies disease because it is a human health risk and protecting your dog helps prevent humans from exposure. All vaccinations help to protect your puppy from potentially fatal diseases.

Why is it important to vaccinate your puppy?

vaccines provide a good way of preventing potentially fatal diseases in puppies who no longer have their mother’s antibodies in their bloodstream after 6 to 7 weeks of age. Vaccines allow the puppy to form their antibodies against diseases by exposing them to small amounts of killed viruses and bacteria in the vaccines. Usually, puppies should be vaccinated starting at eight weeks of age and then be repeating the immunization at 12 weeks and once more at 16 weeks. This is important to the puppy’s health as vaccines will protect against diseases that can be contracted from other puppies or dogs.

At what age should I bring in my puppy for its vaccinations?

Puppies should be vaccinated starting at around 7 to 8 weeks of age; After that two more sets of vaccines will be administered about four weeks apart. Some of the vaccines will be split which reduces the likelihood of any reactions. This may require more frequent trips for vaccines but does not change the cost.

How should I prepare my puppy for its first vaccination visit?

Make sure your puppy is fed and exercised as it is easier to examine a puppy that is not distracted by hunger and not frustrated by lack of exercise. Also, make sure you have been handling your puppy’s ears and eyes and mouth and feet so that it is accustomed to having these areas touched. Make sure you have all of your previous vaccines records, microchip information, deworming information, diet information and a list of any questions or concerns you may have. Please bring a fresh stool sample from your puppy so we can check for parasites. Please be sure to let us know if your puppy has not been well.
